What is CSC?

CSC stands for Card Security Code, which is a three- or four-digit value printed on the card or signature strip on the back of the credit card.   It provides consumers with online transaction safety by requiring additional numbers located on the actual credit card.

For MasterCard, Visa, and Discover, the code is three-digit.   It is not embossed like the card number, but printed immediately after the card number on the signature strip on the back of the card.

For American Express, the code is four-digit, and printed on the front side of the card above the card number.   It is printed flat, not embossed like the card number.
