New federal standards for ‘forever chemicals’ to clean up California’s tap water

The U.S. EPA announced the first-ever national standards for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as “forever chemicals,” in drinking water. The EPA estimates that 6%-10% of public water systems in the U.S., including over 200 in California, will need to take action to meet the new standards within five years.

Last week, the U.S. EPA issued the first-ever national limits on PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," in tap water. Because California lacks strong regulations of its own, the EPA's new national standard will, over the next five years, significantly curtail the amount of cancer-causing chemicals that flow from California faucets.
