Leadership on Environment Would Draw Yuppies to GOP
While much hand-wringing has followed the 2000 election concerning the need for the Republican Party to attract more minority voters, relatively little attention has been given to the unprecedented difficulties George W. Bush and other Republicans encountered in mostly white suburbs, especially in the Northeast. Indeed, had rural America not gravitated so heavily to the GOP in 2000, largely due to social and cultural issues, Bush's relatively poor showing in many suburban areas, particularly among women, would have cost him the election.
