Brazilian Authorities Fail to Address Police Death Squads

In 1993, Elizabeth Cristina de Oliveira Maia witnessed and survived a military police massacre of street children in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was scheduled to testify at a related hearing this past October, but on Sept. 26, 2000, she was shot dead. Before being murdered, she had braved a number of threats to testify against those who carried out the massacre of street children.
