Study reveals demand on state's rivers far exceeds supply

A UC Davis study calls for better data on water use in the state as drought puts pressure on water supplies.

Water is in high demand in California - in fact, really high demand. People hold water rights to five times as much water as flows in the state's rivers. While that fact has long been suspected by those familiar with the state's water rights system, a recent UC Davis study has for the first time quantified the outsized demand on the state's major rivers.
