Santa Monica's Rape Treatment Center works to improve how law enforcement treat victims

In its 40th year, the center has served more than 30,000 victims and been recognized nationally for its training of law enforcement and prosecutors on how to interact with sexual assault victims.

The legal system was far from easy to navigate for rape victims in California in 1974. Police officers could make victims take lie detector tests, cases rarely went to trial and courts could admit prior sexual history of the victim as evidence.
