Dewey & LeBoeuf: Lessons from a downfall

In the wake of the 2007 merger that created Dewey & LeBoeuf, the new firm's leaders considered a traditional partnership management structure. They quickly opted instead for top-down management that many say led to its demise.

A draft agenda for Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP's first partners meeting in early 2008 posed a question that is on the lips of many large law firm leaders and one that would ultimately shape Dewey's fate.


"Partnership or Corporation?" were written across the cover sheet of the agenda, directly below the new firm's letterhead.
