Ashcroft Undergoes Trial by Fire

WASHINGTON - John Ashcroft was just 220 days into his new job when the world turned upside down. Before the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, Ashcroft was known more for blistering confirmation hearings, his support for conservative causes and his early-morning prayer breakfasts than for any changes he had made at the massive Justice Department.
