Court Takes 'Downer Pigs' Case

The U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday to hear the meat industry's challenge to a California law that calls for swine that are so sick they can't walk to be immediately killed.


The U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday to hear the meat industry's challenge to a California law that calls for swine that are so sick they can't walk, known as 'downer pigs,' to be immediately killed.


In disputing the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision upholding the law, the industry says that federal slaughterhouse regulations pre-empt the state statute. National Meat Association v. Brown, 10-224.
