Court Rules on Crack Sentencing

Federal judges can reduce prison time for inmates who pleaded guilty to crack cocaine charges prior to the closed disparity between penalties for crack and powder cocaine, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday.


Federal judges can reduce prison time for inmates who pleaded guilty to crack cocaine charges previous to new sentencing guidelines that closed the disparity between penalties for crack and powder cocaine, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday.


Justice Anthony M. Kennedy joined the court's four left-leaning justices in the 5-4 decision. Kennedy wrote the plurality opinion, with Justice Sonia Sotomayor filing a concurring opinion.
