Pot hearing underscores need for action

State legislators have two choices: do nothing, leaving the status quo of weak regulation and never-ending battles with the federal government, or pass comprehensive statewide regulations.

Last week, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a historic hearing on the conflict between federal and state marijuana laws. The hearing followed a recent Department of Justice memo advising federal prosecutors to focus enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states with conflicting policies on eight priorities, including preventing sales to minors and targeting those who use state-authorized marijuana activity as a cover for selling other drugs.
