San Francisco opens court to aid military veterans

San Francisco's new "Veterans Justice Court" is dedicated to former military personnel who have been charged with nonviolent alcohol or drug-related felonies and misdemeanors. It joins nine similar programs around California.

SAN FRANCISCO - On a recent Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco County Superior Court, an Army infantry veteran patiently waited to hear a judge's evaluation of his efforts to overcome substance abuse. When he stood, the whole courtroom applauded, and a staffer offered him a piece of candy.
