Survivors' Moral Objections Allow Some Killers to Live

The prosecution of a sensational triple homicide presents plenty of challenges in a small rural county. But in choosing whether to seek the death penalty against Cary Stayner for his alleged slaying of three Yosemite National Park sightseerers, the Mariposa County District Attorney faces a gut-wrenching conundrum: Family survivors of the victims are themselves split over whether they want Stayner sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.
