Pandora not allowed to lock music publishers into next big licensing deal

A federal judge's ruling unsealed Monday leaves music publishers free to jump in or out of the next blanket licensing deal between BMI and Pandora.

In a decision that casts further uncertainty onto an already fluid digital music industry, a federal judge has rejected Pandora Music Inc.'s effort lock in major music publishers to the Oakland-based company's next contract with giant licensing clearinghouse Broadcast Music Inc.
