Good luck not flunking out after your first semester of college! These were the words of encouragement from my high school honors economics teacher. Her comments stung like a bee. She taught me that I could not trust or rely on anyone.


I was scared. My gut told me she knew I was a fraud, and that my graduating was a fluke. She made it clear that I did not belong in college; rather, I belonged with the rest of my Laotian refugee community...
