Sacramento lawyer sends message with $185M award, but it may not survive

Attorneys said the award would likely be cut in post-trial motions because of a U.S Supreme Court ruling that limits the amount punitive damages can exceed compensatory damages.

The jaw-dropping $185 million in punitive damages awarded Monday to a former AutoZone Stores Inc. employee was no random number. Attorney Lawrance A. Bohm presented it to a seven-member jury as a way to send a message to the company's leadership as part of his closing arguments.
