Movie makers butt heads with investors

Basic risk mitigation techniques and smart Wall Street investors have proven no cure for the contractual disputes that have long plagued film financing.

After a time of recession-era dormancy, slate film financing has made a return, with consortia of investors partnering with studios and production houses to finance a year or more's worth of films at a time. Most major studios inked slate deals this year, as have smaller companies like Thunder Road Pictures, which last month signed a pact worth over $200 million.
