Eco Groups Target Sugar Beets

Monsanto has a virtual lock on the sugar beet market, controlling 95 percent of all sugar beets grown in the U.S. But several environmental groups and organic farming interests are in court hoping to uproot that success.

SAN FRANCISCO - A quiet revolution took place in the sugar industry in 2005 when biotech giant Monsanto Co. got the federal government's approval to sell genetically modified sugar beet seeds to farmers.
