Bearded Black Firefighters Claim Bias

SAN FRANCISCO - California discriminates against black firefighters by requiring them to shave, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The lawsuit claims that the state agency overseeing workplace safety began discriminating against blacks in 1998 when it adopted rules prohibiting anyone with visible facial hair from working in a job requiring them to wear a respirator. This group includes firefighters, who are often required to wear oxygen masks.
