OXNARD - Two abandoned buildings, named the Halaco Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, were demolished March 1. The structures constitute a former metal smelting plant that operated from 1965 to 2004 in a location adjacent to the ocean and ecosystems deemed sensitive by the EPA, including the Ormond Beach Wetlands and Lagoon. The agency has been coordinating the clean-up of the site and removal of hazardous substances since 2006.
