Ruling Leaves Flashlight Market Intact

Two days after hearing oral arguments, a federal appellate court in Washington invalidated a patent that might have turned off millions of headlamp-style flashlights.

Acting swiftly to uphold a ruling by U.S. District Judge Manuel Real, a federal appellate court Thursday rejected a patent whose challengers claim might have driven millions of headlamp-style flashlights off the market.


The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit heard oral arguments Tuesday in the case, and then issued an unsigned, one-page order upholding Real's ruling just two days...
