School districts rolling out student-tracking programs
School districts have admitted that using tracking devices allows them to retain more state funding, which is tied to attendance numbers, by counting students whose devices appear on campus during the school day. By Steve Elzie




Northside Independent School District in Austin, Texas, made headlines recently for embedding microchip tracking devices in its student ID cards. Other school districts in Houston, Texas, and Sacramento and Richmond, California, have either considered or launched similar programs. The Austin school district used Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) in order to track students as they enter, move about and exit school campuses.
