MALDEF hosts annual awards gala
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund held its annual awards gala on Nov. 8 at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Silvia R. Argueta, executive director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, was among those honored at the gala, receiving the award for excellece in legal service. MALDEF president and general counsel Thomas A. Saenz said he was pleased with the outpouring of support for the work MALDEF is involved in throughout the nation. Bilingual educator and children's book author Jose-Luis Orozco was given the lifetime achievement award for leadership in the arts. Dr. Harry Pachon was posthumously awarded the lifetime achievement award for excellence in community service. Pachon was a scholar-activist and president of the Tomas Rivera Instute at USC who had served as chief of staff for U.S. Rep. Edward Roybal in the late 1970's. Pachon's widow, Barbara, acceped the award on his behalf. -Connie Lopez
