Nonlawyers Compete in World of Mediation

George Smith, a former human resources executive, who switched careers five years ago, is among a growing number of nonlawyer mediators in California. When lawyers balk at allowing him to take their cases, Smith shows them a resume that includes 700 successful mediations and the Los Angeles County Superior Court's 2005 Volunteer Mediator of the Year Award.

      LOS ANGELES - When lawyers balk at George Smith because they want another lawyer mediating their cases, he doesn't get offended.
