Small firms increasingly facing leadership quandaries

With many smaller firms getting gobbled up by bigger firms looking to expand their regional footprints, many firms are finding themselves at a crossroads as they weigh long-term impacts of major partner shakeups.

Brian Harnik and his colleagues at six-lawyer Indian Wells civil firm Roemer & Harnik LLP were thrust into a difficult situation in May 2007 when founding partner Dick Roemer died. While Roemer had shared information about his cases with co-workers, Harnik said the firm had to work to re-establish relationships with certain clients.
