In 1985, nobody knew what mediation was all about, Roberts said.
That's the year the San Diego attorney was tapped by the American Arbitration Association to be trained in a new mediation program it planned to launch.
"They brought out trainers to San Diego from New York, and selected a few retired judges and a few lawyers," Roberts recalled. "They trained us, mostly in the business and construction arena."
