Defendants don't have right to confront lab technician, coroner, state Supreme Court rules

Two cases generated an abnormally high level of activity from the frequently unanimous state Supreme Court, with eight separately written opinions. Defense attorneys lambasted the rulings as undermining U.S. Supreme Court precedent.

SAN FRANCISCO - In a trio of cases, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday that criminal defendants do not have a constitutional right to confront the lab technicians and coroners who prepared the scientific evidence that helped convict them.
