Modest proposal to loosen budget constraints on courts

On May 14, Gov. Jerry Brown unveiled a revised 2012-2013 budget that cuts $544 million from the court budget. This was on top of the $653 million in cuts that have been made to the judicial branch since 2008.


Significant one-time and ongoing budget cuts have forced courts to close courtrooms, lay off staff, redirect funds allocated to planned construction projects, eliminate court reporters and tap into reserves....
