A fight has erupted over a state Assembly bill that would alter a nearly century-old law that governs who can be appointed Los Angeles County's public defender.


The bill, AB 259, now sits on the Senate floor awaiting the return of legislators from summer recess. It would allow judges and other court officers and elected officials to immediately be appointed as public defenders. Current law requires...
