High speed rail project squeezes by in key senate vote

Unresolved, however, are lawsuits challenging the project that critics said will now proceed.

A tight vote saw California's controversial high speed rail project barely pass a trial-by-fire in the state Senate Friday.


The Senate approved an initial $8 billion funding plan, which includes $2.6 billion in state bond funding and $3.2 billion in federal funds, for an initial portion of the project in the Central Valley. The bill now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown.
