Bribery busts show medical marijuana's growing shadows

A cluster of cases in Southern California highlights what appears to be a growing trend: local officials allegedly accepting bribes from medical marijuana operators eager to keep their doors open in the face of growing legal uncertainty.

In January, at a Mexican restaurant in Montebello, a small business owner sat down to talk shop with two Cudahy city officials. With a local moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries set to expire and the city council reportedly looking to allow one or two shops to open, the competition was stiff.
