Hard Time

Adult prisons are no place for children. The Daily Journal recently profiled Zena Long, 16, one of four girls incarcerated in a woman's facility in California. Long spoke of the isolation, the lack of mental-health therapy and the confusion about her life and why she ended up in prison with much older women. Although surrounded by many women, the "sight and sound" rules prohibit her from speaking to the adults. Violating the rule may add 30 days to her prison term.
