An exception to a federal statute that protects Internet service providers and search engines from liability got Google Inc. into $500 million worth of trouble with the U.S. government.


The U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday that Google would forfeit $500 million in profits it earned from selling advertising to online Canadian pharmacies via the search engine's AdWords program.
