Airbnb claims to be part of a new sharing economy. The San Francisco board of supervisors is considering legislation that will allow this "new sharing economy" to co-exist alongside a 35-year-old rent control system. But Airbnb's business is neither sharing nor new.
There is no sharing in an Airbnb transaction. Tenants charge tourists for the short-term use of the tenants' apartments and Airbnb gets a cut. The Airbnb transaction is unregulated free market economics at its best. For only $95 a month (the price of 2 article purchases)
