Judge Reduces Sentence Due to Undisclosed Customs Cash Bonuses

SAN FRANCISCO - In a highly unusual move, a federal judge has significantly reduced a cocaine smuggling sentence because the defense was not told until after the end of a 1997 trial that U.S. Customs Service agents received special cash bonus awards for their work.
