California continues to spend large sums of taxpayer money on housing and treatment of physically and mentally ill inmates in state prisons, even though current state law allows prison officials to release these inmates.


Under the "compassionate release" law, a prisoner who is projected to live less than six months or is permanently incapacitated can be released at the discretion of the California Parole Board.
