Vacancies spur a discount boom

As discount variety stores put down stakes in centers in more affluent areas across the state, lawyers negotiating the leases say they've been running into resistance from neighboring businesses, complicating contracts.

Across California, shuttered anchor stores are still giving a black eye to once-thriving shopping centers. But the vacant spaces are proving to be a lucrative expansion opportunity for discount retailers such as 99 Cents Only Stores Inc., Dollar General Corp. and Big Lots Stores Inc., which recently have seen sales surge as people try to stretch their dollars further in the down economy.
