Billable-Hour Model Has Some Major Side Effects

Employment Column - By Valerie A. Fontaine - Billing by the hour is central to private law practice today. However, using time as a measure for fees has negatively affected the legal profession, including the service attorneys provide their clients and the quality of life of the lawyers themselves. In August, the American Bar Association released the results of a study conducted by its Commission on Billable Hours that elucidates the deleterious effects of hourly billing and urges alternatives.
