Forum Column - By Mary L. Smith - The U.S. Supreme Court just reaffirmed that equal opportunity in higher education remains central to our nation's values. In upholding the constitutionality of the University of Michigan Law School's affirmative-action program in Grutter v. Bollinger , 2003 DJDAR 6800 (U.S. June 23, 2003), the court recognized that diversity is a compelling interest that yields benefits in the classroom and beyond.
