An arbitrator has awarded $2.4 million to a former high school football player who broke his neck four years ago during a tryout at North Hollywood High School.
Johnny Rider, then 15, was not wearing a helmet or protective pads when he participated in a drill for running backs. He suffered a five-way cervical spine fracture and underwent a laminectomy, an operation to remove a portion of the vertebra.
