Think of the precision: new words for every 'marriage'

Some suggest that perhaps the two camps in "the culture war" over gay marriage could get along if we just adopted a new word. By Trenton H. Norris

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR COLUMN

Elizabeth Byrne Debreu ("Language and Marriage," Aug. 17, 2012) suggests that perhaps the two camps in "the culture war" over gay marriage could get along if we just adopted a new word other than "marriage" for the "new and young institution" of long-term, committed, same-sex relationships. Ms. Debreu notes, "In English, when something new comes along, we make up new words."
