Prison Overcrowding Calls for Changes in Sentencing Laws

On May 23, the inhumanity of the overcrowding in California's prisons came to light when the U.S. Supreme Court ordered California to reduce its prison population in order to alleviate extreme overcrowding, endangering the health and safety of the state's prison population. The Court ordered a 137.5 percent reduction in the prison population. The current prison population is at nearly 200 percent over capacity.
