Prisoner Plan Could Vary By County

The governor's realignment plan has gained new momentum in light of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling ordering a reduction in the state's prison population, and the effect of it could vary dramatically by county.

The only thing for certain after the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling Monday in Brown v. Plata is that California's prison population will be reduced by at least 30,000 over the next few years.


How that happens remains undetermined. And some experts say approaches could vary dramatically by county, creating a patchwork of prison realignment efforts.
