The System: 'Tough Time To Be a Kid'

The fresh faces seemed hopeful, full of promise. With the exception of one boy who said he was proud of his gang involvement, all were remorseful about what they had done to cause them to be incarcerated in these dismal detention facilities. During visits to two paramilitary-style boot camps in Saugus and two juvenile halls - one in Sylmar and the other in East Los Angeles - all operated by the county probation department, a Daily Journal reporter was given an opportunity to speak with 10 incarcerated kids.
