Governor Often Finds Himself in Tug of War Over Paroles
California's governor has broad leeway to deny parole to murderers, thanks in part to a 2002 ruling by the state Supreme Court that reaffirmed the power of the executive branch. But with a spate of appellate-court rulings that have challenged the governor’s authority, the issue is once again before the high court.

Sandra Lawrence got a second chance at life this summer when the courts released her from prison, where she had spent more than two decades for murdering her lover's wife in a jealous rage.
Now living in a halfway house in Claremont, the 60-year-old is devoting her time to helping other female ex-felons find jobs.
