Testimonial Woes
By Steve Baughman. In a recent political-asylum trial, my client testified to having paid a $25,000 fine for political activities deemed unsavory by his home government. This testimony was fully consistent with a written statement he had submitted to the court before trial. To my consternation, the court interpreter added a zero to the figure. Now, unbeknownst to my client, he was on record as testifying to having paid a $250,000 fine.
