Justices Let School Suppress Student Speech

Placing new limits on the free-speech rights of students, a divided U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that school administrators can suppress student speech that advocates illegal drug use. The decision, backed by the court’s five conservative justices, vindicated an Alaska high-school principal who ripped down a student’s marijuana-themed banner proclaiming “Bong Hits 4 Jesus,” the now-famous message that may not mean anything at all.
