WASHINGTON - Wading into the controversy over federal penalties for crack-cocaine offenses, the U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that it would decide whether judges can issue lower sentences in crack cases because they believe the prison terms called for under the advisory federal sentencing guidelines are too harsh.
