Judges can't accept small gifts from parties, ethics panel declares
Even "de minimus" gifts from litigants are forbidden, a Supreme Court judicial ethics committee says in a draft opinion clarifying a common worry. And judges should treat all gifts from lawyers with suspicion.

Clarifying the rules about a common worry for judges, a judicial ethics committee has declared that judges shouldn't accept even small gifts from litigants who have appeared in their court or who may appear in the future.
"Even gifts of nominal value ... are subject to the canons that govern gifts," the state Committee on Judicial Ethics Opinions wrote in a draft opinion released ...
