Convicted murderer may get another chance to prove innocence

A man convicted of murder largely on the basis of an expert witness who later recanted may get a new chance to prove his innocence using DNA evidence, under a state Supreme Court order.


William J. Richards, convicted in 1997 of murdering his wife, sought DNA testing of the crime scene evidence. A trial judge denied the request on the grounds that the results would be speculative.
